Growing Kings believes that most at-risk youth can be best supported by being diverted to a network of intentional, long-term care, as opposed to arrest and incarceration. The King in Me is an alternative-to-detention diversion program designed to reduce the number of low-level juvenile cases filed, and reduce the overall number of male youth who become involved with the juvenile court system. The program engages 14-17 year old male youth who have been arrested, are actively involved in the juvenile justice system, pose a risk to public safety, and/or are likely to fail to appear in court. The King in Me employs a non-punitive approach in the filing of juvenile cases by diverting youth into an evidence-based treatment program, as opposed to pursuing post-adjudication consequences, which often result in a juvenile record and juvenile detention.
The King in Me provides comprehensive enrichment programming that focuses on self, family, and community. Program sessions explore principles such as love, honesty, responsibility, perseverance, and accountability; and allow participants to heal the elements of trauma that have produced negative outcomes in their lives. The King in Me is available to young men whom have been processed and charged with one of a specific set of juvenile delinquent acts; including, but are not limited to: low-level misdemeanors, domestic violence, substance abuse, property crimes, probation violations, weapons, Children in Need of Supervision offenses, and technical violations.
